WASHINGTON (MARCH 23) PRWIRE - In response to a U.S. State Department
announcement that as a party to the International Maritime Satellite (INMARSAT)
convention, the United States has ratified amendments allowing provision of
aeronautical satellite service by INMARSAT, the Communications Satellite Corp.
(COMSAT) (NYSE: CQ) issued the following statement by Bruce Crockett,
president, COMSAT's World Systems Division:
"We welcome the State Department's action. Acceptance of INMARSAT's
aeronautical amendments will enable the introduction of aeronautical satellite
services in the U.S., provide air passengers with modern communications, and
enhance the safety of transoceanic flight."
COMSAT stated that the provision of such competitive services is of critical
and time-sensitive proportions.
COMSAT is the principal owner and user of the INMARSAT consortium, an
international body of nations engaged in providing communications in and
through the cooperative efforts of 54 nations of the world.
As of March 20, 1988, approximately 70 percent of the total investment shares
in INMARSAT, represented by 21 of the necessary 30 nations required for
ratification of the treaty, had accepted the amendments.
